Stuart Devlin - The Designer with the Midas Touch

TitleStuart Devlin - The Designer with the Midas Touch
Group NameRoyal Australian Mint
DescriptionFrom the platypus amid rippling water to a resplendent lyrebird, Geelong-born Stuart Devlin AO is best known in Australia as the designer of our decimal coins. The much-loved coins were the springboard for an international career as the most creative and influential designer goldsmith and silversmith of the past 50 years. An exhibition of his work – Stuart Devlin - The Designer with the Midas Touch – opened at the Royal Australian Mint on 16 December 2016, fifty years after his decimal coins went into circulation. Crediting the commencement of his illustrious career to designing Australia’s decimal coins, Devlin’s influence on twentieth century international art is explored in this historical exhibition. Free to visit, Stuart Devlin -The Designer with the Midas Touch will feature specific highlights from Devlin’s career including an iconic place setting and candelabrum from his personal collection, the ubiquitous Wiltshire Staysharp carving knife and original sketches from where it all began. This is the first time that a selection from his creative genius has been brought together in one exhibition in Australia. Together, the pieces on display show why Devlin is regarded as the most creative and prolific designer goldsmith and silversmith of his time. Apart from designing Australia’s decimal coins that were released into circulation in February 1966, Devlin has designed coins for 30 other countries, including the United Kingdom and Singapore. He says: ‘I like the fact that millions of people around the world carry my work in their pockets.’ Many honours have come his way, notably his appointment as Goldsmith and Jeweller to the Queen in 1982. After designing many of the awards within the Australian honours system, he was himself appointed an AO in 1988. Among other achievements, he designed the medals and coins for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
